On its first anniversary, Abia is ready to open seven new roads.
In keeping with his plan for road infrastructure and to commemorate one year in office, Abia State Governor Alex Otti will next week officially open seven newly constructed highways in Aba and Umuahia, the state capital.

Prince Okey Kanu, the Commissioner for Information and Culture, revealed this information to the press during a briefing on the results of Governor Otti’s State Executive Council meeting this week. The governor also declared that he will commission the recently finished JAAC building at Ogurube Layout, Umuahia.
The commissioner emphasized that in addition to the newly constructed six-lane Ossah road and the dual carriage Dozie way in Umuahia that was recently restored using direct labor, other roads that will be put into service are University Road, Green Avenue Road, College Road, Kent by Ehi Road, and Old Court Road in Aba.
The Information Commissioner said that the government would commemorate its one-year anniversary on May 29. However, she pointed out that instead of a grand celebration, the Otti administration will observe the day with low-key activities.
He declared, “This government would have been in power for a year by next week as well. It will be 366 days to the day on May 29th that His Excellency, Dr. Otti assumed power as the state’s governor.
“It has been a year of significant leadership.” A year has passed since His Excellency and his group rewrote Abia State’s governance. You would concur with me that the effects are felt not only in Abia State but also throughout Nigeria and even outside its borders.
We’re not going to commemorate one year in the customary manner. In the first term, we still have three left. Notwithstanding all of the government’s accomplishments in a single year, we will simply mark it. As you remember, a number of folks anticipated a celebration when we reached our 100-day mark in office. Though we won’t be having a formal celebration, we will still remember the day. The government will be reflecting and refocusing throughout this time. To commemorate the day, a few low-key activities will be held.
“During this time, the previous narrative about Abia State being underdeveloped, trailing in the comity of states, and other things has drastically changed.”
Prince Kanu announced the events planned to commemorate Governor Otti’s first year in office. These events include town hall meetings led by the governor in each of the state’s three senatorial zones. The Abia North meeting is scheduled for this Thursday at the Ohafia Local Government headquarters; the Abia Central meeting is scheduled for this Friday in Umuahia; and the Abia South meeting is scheduled for Tuesday at the Aba Recreation Club.
He disclosed that the Otti-led administration’s objective for inclusive governance includes these town hall sessions.
He further revealed that on Saturday of this week, the governor’s wife, Mrs. Priscilla Otti, will visit vulnerable and impoverished households in the state, and on Sunday, the 26th, there would be an anniversary thanksgiving ceremony at the International Conference Center in Umuahia.
The following week’s events include an anniversary Executive Council meeting on Monday and a nationwide broadcast on Wednesday, May 29.
Using the occasion, the information commissioner restated that the governor had ordered state security agencies to track down the cyclist who had recently escaped with three school-age children from a single family. The commissioner also assured the family that the children would recover in due course and were safe, warning parents not to take the casual approach of leaving their children in the care of strangers in the state.
In response to inquiries, Prince Uzor Nwachukwu, the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, revealed that Governor Otti had ordered the expansion of the road leading to the JAAC building. He also revealed that over N1.5 billion had been invested to complete the building, with the governor adamant that no government in history had ever made such an investment at the local government level as the Otti administration.
The JAAC building and a number of other projects are typical examples of how Governor Otti, an open-minded administrator, plans to continue working on projects started and abandoned by previous administrations, according to Mr. Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Advisor to the Governor on Media and Publicity, who was also answering questions.
